There’s nothing quite as unsettling as catching a whiff of that telltale “rotten egg” smell in your home.

It’s not your imagination, natural gas is intentionally scented with sulfur compounds to help you detect leaks.

If you ever suspect an HVAC gas line problem, it’s not a situation to take lightly. A gas leak can turn dangerous within moments, so knowing exactly what to do (and what not to do) could make all the difference.

Let’s go over the immediate steps you should take to stay safe and protect your home.

Evacuate Immediately

The very first thing to do is get everyone out of the house, including pets. Don’t waste time looking for the leak or gathering belongings. Natural gas is highly flammable, and even a small spark can cause an explosion. Move calmly but quickly, and make sure all family members are accounted for once outside.

Avoid Anything That Could Cause A Spark

This might sound simple, but it’s one of the most important safety rules. Do not turn on or off any electrical switches, lights, or appliances. Even the smallest spark from a switch or device can ignite the gas. Avoid using your phone until you are outside and far from the house. Similarly, skip lighting candles, matches, or cigarettes.

Ventilate The Area Safely

If you can do so without delaying your exit, open windows or doors on your way out. This helps let some of the gas escape and reduces the concentration inside the home. But remember, your safety comes first. Never linger indoors to open every window if the smell is strong.

Call For Help From A Safe Distance

Once you are outside and at least 300 feet away from the house, call your local gas company’s emergency line or dial 911. Explain the situation clearly and wait for instructions. The professionals will arrive equipped to locate and stop the leak safely. Do not go back inside until they give you the all-clear.

What Not To Do

  • Do not use your cell phone indoors.
  • Do not turn on or off lights, fans, or any appliance.
  • Do not search for the leak with a lighter or a match.
  • Do not attempt to repair the gas line yourself.
